Laparoscopic Hernia Repair
Laparoscopic Hernia Repair is a minimally invasive surgical technique for the treatment of abdominal wall hernias. Compared to traditional open surgery, it offers significant advantages in terms of reduced pain, faster recovery, and lower risk of wound complications. Dr. Parvati R. Falegaonkar is skilled in all laparoscopic hernia repair techniques and tailors the approach to each patient's specific hernia type and condition.
Types of Hernia Treated Laparoscopically
- Inguinal Hernia – most commonly repaired laparoscopically
- Femoral Hernia
- Umbilical Hernia
- Epigastric Hernia
- Incisional/Ventral Hernia
- Recurrent Hernia – laparoscopy is especially advantageous here
Laparoscopic Techniques
TAPP (Trans-Abdominal Pre-Peritoneal) Repair
The peritoneal cavity is entered, a peritoneal flap is raised over the hernia defect, a mesh is placed in the pre-peritoneal space covering the defect, and the peritoneum is closed over it. Allows inspection of both sides simultaneously.
TEP (Totally Extra-Peritoneal) Repair
Performed entirely in the pre-peritoneal space without entering the abdominal cavity. Reduces risk of intra-abdominal complications and adhesions. Considered the preferred technique for inguinal hernias by many surgeons.
IPOM (Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh)
Used primarily for ventral and incisional hernias. A specialized composite mesh is fixed intraperitoneally over the defect.
Advantages Over Open Repair
- Smaller incisions with better cosmetic result
- Less post-operative pain and analgesic requirement
- Faster return to work and normal activities
- Lower wound infection rate
- Ability to assess and treat bilateral hernias simultaneously
- Significantly better outcomes for recurrent hernias
Recovery
Most patients are discharged within 24 hours. Light activities can be resumed within 3–5 days. Heavy lifting and strenuous exercise are restricted for 4–6 weeks to allow mesh integration. Most patients return to work within 1–2 weeks.
