Breast Lump Surgery

A breast lump is a localized swelling or mass in the breast tissue. While many breast lumps are benign (non-cancerous), it is essential to evaluate any new lump promptly. Dr. Parvati R. Falegaonkar provides thorough assessment and surgical removal of breast lumps with a focus on accurate diagnosis, patient safety, and excellent cosmetic outcomes.

Types of Breast Lumps

Fibroadenoma

The most common benign breast tumor in young women. It is firm, smooth, and moves easily under the skin. Surgical removal (lumpectomy/excision) is recommended when the lump is large or growing.

Breast Cyst

Fluid-filled sacs that often feel round and smooth. They may be drained by fine needle aspiration or surgically removed if they recur.

Lipoma

A benign fatty lump that can occur in breast tissue. Surgical excision is straightforward and effective.

Breast Abscess

An infected, painful lump usually associated with breastfeeding. Requires incision and drainage along with antibiotics.

Suspicious or Malignant Lumps

Any lump with irregular borders, hard texture, skin changes, or nipple discharge needs urgent evaluation including biopsy and imaging.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination
  • Ultrasound of the breast
  • Mammography
  • Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)
  • Core needle biopsy or excision biopsy

Surgical Procedure

Breast lump excision (lumpectomy) is performed under local or general anesthesia. The lump is removed with a margin of surrounding tissue. The incision is placed carefully to minimize visible scarring. The removed tissue is sent for histopathological examination to confirm the diagnosis.
