Ganglion Surgery

A ganglion cyst is a non-cancerous, fluid-filled lump that typically develops along tendons or joints of the wrists, hands, feet, or ankles. While many ganglion cysts are harmless and may resolve on their own, surgical excision is recommended when they cause pain, restrict movement, or recur. Dr. Parvati R. Falegaonkar provides safe and effective ganglion surgery with a low recurrence rate.

What is a Ganglion Cyst?

Ganglion cysts are filled with a jelly-like fluid similar to synovial fluid. They arise from the lining of a joint or tendon sheath and vary in size. The exact cause is not fully understood, but joint stress or injury may play a role.

Common Locations

  • Dorsal (back) side of the wrist – most common
  • Volar (palm side) of the wrist
  • Base of the fingers
  • Top of the foot
  • Ankle joints

Symptoms

  • A visible, round, smooth lump near a joint
  • Variable size – may enlarge with activity
  • Pain or tenderness, particularly when pressing on the cyst
  • Restricted joint movement in large cysts
  • Tingling or numbness if pressing on a nerve

Treatment Options

Aspiration

The fluid is drained using a needle. This provides temporary relief but has a higher recurrence rate.

Surgical Excision (Ganglionectomy)

The preferred definitive treatment. The cyst along with its stalk and connection to the joint or tendon sheath is completely removed. This significantly reduces the risk of recurrence. Performed under local or regional anesthesia as a day procedure.

Recovery

Most patients can use the affected area within a few days. Full recovery takes 2–6 weeks depending on the location and extent of surgery. Physiotherapy may be recommended after wrist surgery.

  • Careful excision technique to minimize recurrence
  • Attention to protecting surrounding nerves and vessels
  • Day-care procedure with quick return to activity
